Privacy Statement

This privacy statement explains what we do with your data, how we keep it safe, and how we protect your privacy. The general gist of it is:

  • We are nice, we genuinely want to make the world better, and we won't do anything that might be considered "naughty".
  • We look after your data and won't sell it or share it around. Passwords are encrypted, and the database is secured.
  • We need to set some cookies to allow the site to work, people to log in, etc. We don't set naughty cookies though.

Here's what the law says...

The UK Data Protection Act, 1998

Streetbank ("SB" or "we") is "notified" (mru559) and fully complies with the UK Data Protection Act, 1998. There are eight principles under the Act. These are:

  1. Personal data should be processed fairly and lawfully. This means that individuals should not be deceived or misled into supplying information.
  2. Data should only be obtained for a specified purpose and should not be used for any other purpose.
  3. Personal data should be adequate, relevant and not excessive in relation to its purpose.
  4. Personal data should be accurate and up to date, where necessary.
  5. Personal data should not be kept longer than is needed for its intended purpose.
  6. Personal data should be processed in accordance with the rights of the individual which the information concerns.
  7. Appropriate measures should be taken against unlawful processing or destruction of records. Computer systems should have back-up facilities and security provisions.
  8. Personal data should not be transferred outside the European Economic Area (the EU states plus Lichtenstein, Iceland and Norway.) unless that country or territory ensures an adequate level of protection for the rights and freedoms of data subjects in relation to the processing of personal data.

Will we share your data?

No.

We take care of your information, and we will never disclose personal information to any third parties, except when we are required to do so by law.

As with any website, usage statistics are generated and held by StreetBank. We also use Google Analytics to draw graphs of site activity, where people clicked and when. We do this to help us make the site better. Information gathered in this way is anonymised.

To put it simply, we are nice and will take good care of your account. We promise not do anything "naughty" like pass your details to spammers or "carefully selected third parties".

How secure is information about me?

We maintain physical, electronic and procedural safeguards in connection with the collection, storage and disclosure of personally identifiable member information. Our database is protected, and passwords are encrypted.

It is important that you take care on the internet. Common sense rules apply. Do look after your password. Make sure you install software updates, use a virus protector and firewall, and do take care when using unsecured WiFi networks.

What about "cookies"?

Cookies have had a lot of bad press recently. A cookie is a tiny little text file that lets a webserver i.e. us, recognise a web user i.e. you. When you log in to StreetBank we set a little cookie that lets us remember that you have done so. Without a cookie, there's no way for us to do this, so every time you click a link you will be logged out.

Cookies have also been used by unscrupulous marketers who want to track your behaviour around the internet. We don't get up to any of that sort of thing though because we are nice.

The Help menu on the menu bar of most browsers will tell you how to prevent your browser from accepting new cookies, how to have the browser notify you when you receive a new cookie and how to disable cookies altogether. We suggest you don't do this though or you wont be able to log in.

As mentioned before, we use Google Analytics to draw graphs about site usage. To do this, Google sets a second cookie that lets it gather anonymised usage statistics. You can disable third party cookies in your settings if you don't wont to let us do this.

July 2011 - Updated to highlight which cookies we set, to make it clearer that we won't ever sell your information to third parties, and that we encrypt your password.
