An antidote to Christmas consumer madness
Last year, my colleague, Kate was inspired by a documentary called My Stuff to give away one of her possessions every day in the run up to Christmas. She wanted to rethink the relationship she had with her things.
It was an opportunity to be generous, to give rather than grab and to challenge the consumerist madness that can take hold in the run up to Christmas. She invited anyone that was keen to join her to take the challenge too.
To her delight, the reverse advent challenge proved really popular. It was shared in lots of places online, lots of you took the challenge, and best of all she got to hear about the wonderfully generous things that some of you were doing in the run up to Christmas.
This year, she doesn’t have 24 things to give away, but still has a few things she’d like to share.
She’s going to spend the next few weeks getting it ready and on Tuesday 1st December she’s going to share it on Streetbank.
Why 1st December?
Because it’s #GivingTuesday - a global day of giving. After the sales of Black Friday and the online shopping boom on Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday is an opportunity to come together to show the world why it’s good to give.
What is more, she is going to throw a little neighbourly get together mid-December at her local café. That way, she can give everyone their things at one time – and she’ll get to have a chat and eat mince pies whilst she’s at it.

Recent vigorous decluttering = I have nothing to contribute. I wish I received presents, but I don’t, having no family, and few real friends. However, the good side of this is that I spend Christmas at home in blissful solitude, and can do exactly what I want, when I want it: eating, watching TV shows I like, not having to dress up and make up (joy!). A week in advance of the dreaded week before Christmas I lay in a store of food I love: pheasant, red cabbage, wine and spirits, chocolates (alas).
I don’t have to participate in false jollity ("we HAVE to have a good time even if I don’t get on with everyone present. I enjoy good company – mine. Can see friends another time – NOT New Year’s boring eve. Have fun, all of you.

What a good idea! I doubt I would have sufficient surplus stuff but would like to be kept informed. I have discouraged people from giving me presents, unless consumable, and certainly avoid Christmas hysteria, though sometimes end up, unwittingly, with too many boxes of chocolates, biscuits etc – but I would not know as early as giving day.
